A Century of Friendship & Fellowship in McAllen
A heartwarming birthday celebration recently took place at The Salvation Army of McAllen, honoring four wonderful ladies whose combined membership of the Home League (women’s fellowship) stretches a remarkable 95 years!
Christmas in July was the theme for the day’s activities that included a very special birthday celebration for Antonia Bone who turned 100 years old! Maria Caceres (97), Josephine Espinoza (94), and the baby of the group, Elvira Solis (92) were also recognized for significant birthdays. Friends and family members attended the party that included games, singing, photographs and food, led by Captains Frankie and Jan Zuniga, Salvation Army pastors in McAllen.
The ladies all agreed that one of their favorite memories together is attending the annual Salvation Army Women’s Camp at Camp Hoblitzelle. “I love going to camp and meeting with all the other ladies from around Texas,” said Elvira. “Through the Home League I have also become a Salvation Army church member and enjoy attending services each Sunday.”
“The ladies enjoyed a Christmas sing along, a baking contest of their favorite treats, some fun games and finally the traditional white elephant Christmas gift exchange. Every lady left with a present,” said Captain Jan Zuniga. “We were honored to celebrate the 100th birthday of Ms. Antonia Bone. For many of our ladies, Tuesday morning Home League is significant on their weekly schedule. They schedule their day, week and appointments around our time together. While they enjoy the programs, more significantly they have formed strong friendships and feel part of The Salvation Army family.”
Antonia has been attending The Salvation Army Home League for more than 20 years. “The fellowship with these lovely ladies is my favorite part of coming here,” she said. “I have made some great friends at The Salvation Army over the years and my birthday wish today is that I continue to have good health and can keep attending Home League.”
