100 Hometowns: Lowe’s to Help Renovate Salvation Army Shelter as part of Centennial Celebrations

Abilene, Texas (August 17, 2021) – The Salvation Army shelter in Abilene has been selected as one of 100 Hometown impact projects as part of Lowe’s centennial celebrations. The company is supporting 100 communities in need across the country and will help renovate and refurbish the property that provides shelter, meals, and case management to individuals and families experiencing homelessness.

After 100 years of serving communities across America, Lowe’s is completing 100 impact projects to celebrate the company’s centennial and support worthy initiatives nationwide. The 100 projects span 36 states and will help thousands of families from coast to coast, each of them with a unique story to tell.

The Salvation Army provides year-round shelter and resources for individuals and families while they search for employment and permanent housing. “Our building is aging and has seen significant use over the years. It is certainly in need of a facelift, refurbishment and improvement,” said Captain Joshua McKain, The Salvation Army Officer in Abilene. “We want to congratulate Lowe’s on reaching 100 years of business and service to the community. This incredible grant and opportunity will allow us to update and repair our shelter dormitories, and specifically the shower area that is in desperate need of attention. The repairs will ensure our residents have access to a clean, safe, and dignified space as they work to get back on their feet.”

Every 100 Hometowns project is expected to be completed by the end of this year, and progress from each project can be seen on social media via #100Hometowns.

“We are inspired by the nationwide response to 100 Hometowns, which brought people from all across the country to share with us their remarkable stories and hope for how their community might be made a little better,” said Marvin R. Ellison, Lowe's chairman and CEO. “Lowe’s has been dedicated to improving homes, and hometowns, since its founding in 1921, and we look forward to continuing to do so for the next 100 years.”

“We are so excited The Salvation Army in Abilene has been selected out of literally thousands of organizations around the country as one of the Lowe’s 100 Hometowns,” said McKain. “We are so grateful to Lowe’s for their generosity and investment in the community. They represent the very best in community partners and we can’t wait to get to work!”
