THE SALVATION ARMY AND PRO RACING: A FRIENDSHIP TO ENJOY BEFORE SUMMER ENDS

As some of racing’s best drivers prepare to start their engines this weekend, The Salvation Army Midland Division, in a partnership with Madison, IL’s World Wide Technology Raceway, is giving fans the opportunity to donate to The Salvation Army by typing “SALARMY” in the promo code when purchasing tickets to one of the biggest racing events of the year.

This weekend’s races are headlined by Aug. 20’s Camping World Nascar Truck Series at 8 p.m. and Aug. 21’s NTT Indycar Series Bommarito Automotive Group 500 at 7 p.m. Tens of thousands of fans are expected to fill the cavernous stands around the 2.01-kilometer track.
The Salvation Army, for years, has had close relationships with Nascar drivers and the racing community. Some racers have emblazoned their cars with the Salvation Army Red Shield and logo. Kids and Salvation Army officers have been among the guests of racecar drivers during the races.
The racer with one of the closest connections to The Salvation Army in recent years has been Nascar driver Morgan Shepherd, whose racing team is named “Victory in Jesus.” Shepherd has raced with his entire hood as The Salvation Army Shield, with the message “Racing for Souls” written across the #89 car’s back.
“We don’t have much, but what we have, we can donate to The Salvation Army,” Shepherd said. “I’ve been blessed in so many ways over my career, and this is a way of giving back in honor of our fans and supporters. We’ll do the best we can to promote The Salvation Army and educate people on what The Salvation Army really does to assist the poor and the hungry.”
Nascar driver Joey Gase partnered with The Salvation Army in 2020 for Iowa tornado derecho disaster relief in his native Cedar Rapids, with a Race for Relief fundraiser, putting links to the donation page on Gase’s black-and-white #51 car. More than $22,000 was raised.
“I am so proud of our community,” Gase said after the storm. “We all got together and helped one another as soon as the storm lifted.”
