THE GIRL SCOUTS’ APRIL SHOWERS BRIGHTEN HEALTH AND HYGIENE WITH THE SALVATION ARMY
If you’re looking to make someone’s Easter and Passover healthier and happier, please donate to the Girl Scouts of Eastern Missouri’s April Showers community service program, which, every April, collects new and unused personal care items, some of which The Salvation Army receives for its pantries, shelters and other services.
Donations can be made at Dierbergs and Schnucks grocery stores through April 9. If a household recently received a sticky-paper notification that Girl Scouts were collecting from those homes, products will be picked up April 9.
Donations can also be made online through registries at Amazon’s Charity List and Target’s Charity Registry through April 17.
Those personal care products – which numbered 1.1 million in 2021 – are distributed to agencies, one of which is The Salvation Army, on April 9.
Personal items collected include deodorant, diapers/baby care, adult incontinence, facial tissue, feminine hygiene products, first aid supplies, mouthwash, and shampoo.
“The Salvation Army is involved with April Showers because our volunteers play a large part in deciding where the items collected in their community go,” Heather Eyster, Girl Scouts of Eastern Missouri program manager, said. “That’s all thanks to them.”
Over the past 24 years, eastern Missouri Girl Scouts have collected more than 25 million personal care items and, through this community service program, met an important need unknown to many community leaders and citizens.
“Community service is an integral part of being a Girl Scout,” Eyster said. “It provides girls an opportunity to practice teamwork, build critical-thinking skills and empowers them to make changes in their community.”
