SAGE GALLON PAINTS A BEAUTIFUL PICTURE OF REIMAGINING

Oct 13, 2022

The Salvation Army’s Reimagine 75: Fashion with a Cause is a wonderful place for Sage Gallon to bring his live art show.

He brings an artist’s palette of lifetime experiences, with elements of salvation in his work.

“From The Salvation Army concepts to my work, I think they are very similar,” Sage, who started painting in his early 20s after a childhood spent drawing, said. “I think both examine how we are intricately connected.”

The published artist, well-rounded technically and booked consistently on art shows, moved from Washington, D.C., in the 1990s, to a decades-long stay in L.A., to New York City, in 2021.

When inspiration hits, Sage hits the canvas. His introduction and reintroduction to painting, Sage said, emerged was when he was struggling with or re-establishing sobriety.

“I learned from a very tumultuous childhood that art was my go-to thing for salvation, to find quiet space and get away from things that were happening in the household,” Sage said. “I had a relapse, and that’s what got me into painting again. It was kind of a transformative experience. It started to become something that people showed interest in.”

Fundamentally, Sage’s inspirations are women and social constructs, he said.

Both of these concepts – the beauty of creation and deconstruction – weave through the Reimagine 75 fashion show, with its 12 local designers and 16 models, and its perspective on tomorrow.

“[I was] being raised by and loved by two of the most powerful people on the planet, who are women,” Sage said. “Like my mother, who was one of my greatest inspirations. Particularly women of color, who struggled and fought and clawed their way up to create exemplary lives and have the ability to extend love beyond any comprehension. I think women are the most powerful of the sexes.”

Sage’s piece will be painted from 6 to 8 p.m., while Reimagine 75 attendees enjoy the evening. A live auction throughout the show will give visitors a chance to make a bid.

Sage’s paintings have been purchased for up to $15,000. Regardless of how much Sage’s painting earns that night, the winner will go home with a priceless souvenir.
