Celebrating National Donut Day with The Salvation Army
The Salvation Army marked the 85th anniversary of Donut Day with a heartwarming celebration on Friday, June 2nd. From The Salvation Army Veterans Residence to the Missouri Veterans Home, from the St. Louis Veterans Affairs Medical Center at Jefferson Barracks to the John Cochrane Veterans Hospital, and even at the USO in Lambert Airport and Christian Hospital, the spirit of appreciation for veterans filled the air as free donuts were shared with gratitude.
This cherished tradition was made possible by the dedication of numerous volunteers, including a team from Wells Fargo, who joined The Salvation Army to hand out donuts and engage in conversations with veterans. Amidst the smiles and stories shared, a sense of community and gratitude pervaded the atmosphere.
Volunteer Rachel Holland reflecting on her experience, said, "It's amazing to be able to volunteer for my employer, at the hospital where I receive my healthcare and serving my fellow Veterans. Thank you to The Salvation Army for partnering with Wells Fargo & a HUGE thank you to all the Veterans who stopped by, even if it was to chat."
Indeed, Donut Day holds a special place in the hearts of The Salvation Army and the communities it serves. It is an opportunity to pay tribute to the brave men and women who have selflessly served their country. The Salvation Army aims to honor their sacrifices and express gratitude for their service by commemorating this occasion. Started by The Salvation Army in Chicago in 1938, the day honors The Salvation Army's "donut lassies," who served treats and assisted soldiers on the front lines during World War I. Around 250 volunteers traveled from the U.S. to the front lines in France to support the soldiers, offering them home comforts, including food, supplies, clothing, and emotional support. The donut lassies won the soldiers' hearts for their bravery and sweet treats.
"Donut Day is an important tradition for us at The Salvation Army that we look forward to celebrating each year," said a representative from The Salvation Army. "This year, the 85th anniversary of Donut Day, it's always a real positive to see the occasion celebrated in our community. We thank all those who have served in our military and those who participate in Donut Day activities throughout the U.S."
While the donuts provided a delightful treat, The Salvation Army also highlighted the ongoing challenges many in the community faced. In addition to offering free donuts, The Salvation Army accepted donations to support its essential efforts in providing food, shelter, and other crucial services to individuals experiencing homelessness, poverty, and various hardships.
By generously contributing, individuals can help The Salvation Army continue its vital mission of assisting those in need. Donations can be made online at salarmy.us/DonutDonate, allowing supporters to make a lasting impact and extend a helping hand to their fellow community members.
As the aroma of freshly baked donuts faded, the spirit of appreciation, unity, and compassion instilled by Donut Day continued to resonate in the hearts of all those involved. The Salvation Army and its volunteers, alongside the community, reaffirmed their commitment to honoring veterans, celebrating traditions, and fostering a stronger, more caring society.
Together, through acts of kindness, gratitude, and support, we can make a difference in the lives of those who have served and ensure that the spirit of Donut Day lives on.
